It was a cold February night in the beautiful city of Agra, the freezing waters of the Yamuna crinkled in the moonlight. The reflection of the greatest symbol love in its waters looked magnificient. It was about midnight when two figures walked down a bridge built over this holy river.Ayaan and Sahil had met a few years ago when Sahil had interned in the company that Ayaan worked in. Their bond of friendship developed stronger through the years. Funny but Sahil was actually older than Ayaan, because when he had come out as gay to his wonderful family after school ended, they had kicked him out.So he had to work hard for 3 years until he was able to pay his college fee for the first year.In college, he never told anyone about him being gay, because these highly educated ignorant bastards would never understand him. Ayaan was smart enough to know that though his family boasted of being classy and modern yet they would never accept his sexuality. So, he kept himself confined in the closet. No one in the world knew that he was gay, so he didn’t fear being tortured and hated by the people of one of the world’s superpowers. It was the year 2014 when they met. After the friendship developed, they began to like each other, went on dates, surprised each other with gifts, cared for each other and did all the sappy romantic stuff that happens in all beautiful relationships. They eventually fell in love with each other.Their relationship always remained strong even when they were faced with crisis, unhappiness , anger, disagreements etc.It was in 2016 that Ayaan’s family chose a bride from a wealthy family for him and came to surprise him for the engagement, because come on , the marriage of 2 people deserves to be consented to by everyone but the 2 people who are getting married. They saw him holding hands with Sahil and kissing his cheek. They accused sahil of “infecting” their child and demanded to contact his family, but alas, his family had disowned him long ago. They forced Ayaan to come back home with them so that they could get this disease off him. However , he ran back to Agra. They then threatened to file a police complaint against Sahil and Ayaan for being in a gay relationship. When they searched about it on the internet, lo and behold, it was really a crime to fall in love. But what else they found out was that if they both agreed to the charges filed against them, they would send 10 years in jail but if they pretended that it was a forced relation, it would be a lesser sentence , i.e. only 7 years. They both pleaded Ayaan’s family to not do this but the homophobes didn’t budge. So, in order to save each other, they separated and Ayaan agreed to marry the girl. But however much he tried, he couldn’t get himself to get attracted to her. It was not because he had a choice, but because he was born gay and he would always remain gay, because it was what God had made him to be.A few months later, when he couldn’t bear this anymore, he searched for Sahil, who had been scared off by Ayaan’s family. They talked for a few weeks and found a little happiness in just texting and calling. They still longed for each other, but atleast this was better than nothing. They loved each other so much that they could sacrifice their own lives for each other. Finally came a wonderful news that article 377 of the Indian constitution was not valid. How they rejoiced!!They hoped that now the society would change a bit and accept them for who they are, but little did they know that this cruel country can never become liberal in its beliefs , inspite of whatever it boasts of.Nothing changed for them.Coming back to the present, as you have guessed , these two people walking were Ayaan and Sahil. They had eventually decided that they could not bear to be separated from the love of their lives . They longed for each other desperately. They decided to end the misery that this society had bestowed upon them. They jumped off the bridge and the deep and freezing water engulfed them forever. They were no Romeo and Juliet or no Heer and Ranjha because I am not very good at expressing the depth of love as I am no Shakespeare. But, similar to these couples, they were separated by this cruel society and killed themselves so their souls could unite. No one would remember them because people looked at their love with loathing and hatred. When their families were informed about the suicides, they didn’t even bother to take the bodies from the police for their last rites. Some people justified their hatred by saying that it is unnatural or a disease but science has proven that being homosexual is not abnormal, it is who you are from the beginning. Some use their religion to justify the loathing but no religion in this world teaches us to hate someone or to spread hatred towards any person.Every religion teaches us to love and respect others for who they are. And besides that, love is a beautiful emotion which binds two souls together and as we all know very well, souls have no gender. As losers always find an excuse for failing, haters always find a reason or a manipulation to hate others. But if You really want to love and respect others despite their sexual orientation, even one reason will be more than enough. There are so many Ayaans and Sahils who we don’t even know about and their tragic love stories are even more touching than the popular tales of tragic love but they are not even known because we people are so ignorant , heartless and sefish to acknowledge such beautiful love that shows that love knows no boundaries of caste, religion, gender and faith.Ayaan and Sahil died in the city of love during the month of love and, let me rephrase myself, it was not a suicide , it was a murder that we all committed. We killed another two individuals who would otherwise have been a beautiful example of the beauty and depth of the emotion called love. So, please tell me what you think of this story...
