I used to try to teach my kids sports. Now in honesty; I mainly did better cause I was just stronger; faster, quicker. Part of coaching in football is trying to hurt opposing key players. Specifically QBs. This happened a lot in the past. This is why QBs stopped running around; & stayed in pocket. It’s why even though I was the best QB I ended up fullback. As soon as the play broke down, I was gone. I thought the goal was to score. No. Stay in pocket. I don’t want to. So run it then. Rules were passed to save QBs. Jerry Rice over the middle. Etc. We put entertainment over the game. But it was a brutal game. I like it better this way. True. Defense doesn’t work anymore. Now the QBs can run every play. I watch some of them and laugh. I was more accurate short & long. Well Georgia was trying to knock out the QB. I’ve seen this out of them in the past. So it’s Kirby. You notice tendencies of the O. You plan for jail breaks. Meet at the QB. Everyone suddenly goes faster. Shoots the gaps. Exploits a tendency. Try to destroy the QB. Did you see the O lineman or TE get bent back? Someone has learned a tendency of his. It tells you that Kirby has put a lot of focus into beating this one team. I used to live up & no one cared. Just some guy. As the game progressed I’d hear you block him. No you block. I can’t block him. I can’t block him, he already hurt me. He a$$ hole, you hurt our QB were going to hurt you. Yeah right. By the time you start to move in at the QB. I’m a sprinter in front of you. I’d tell the center. It’s nice weather. Enjoy the fall. Then I’d knock him on his a$$ as I ran after the QB. You had 3 choices. Fall down fast. Try to reach the sideline before I crushed you. Or stand still & get crushed. But I’d also try to knock them the ball out. I’d jerk people up in the air. Swipe at the ball with one hand, & slam the them down. Lots of fumbles. Georgia & Clemson are playing old school grandpa football. I used to tell people. I’m going to pick him up & hold him. You help pull the ball out. If we do it fast enough they won’t blow the whistle. For some reason a lot of things I did were penalties. Even if they weren’t. But I learned something. If I kept doing something enough. They’d miss some of it. Get tired of arguing with the coach. The coach would yell at me. Don’t do that. Then on the sidelines. Keep doing that. So that’s fine. Georgia smashed the QB early. Did you see his eyes? Surprise. I’d see that in the start of games. I lined up in different places if I could. The coach wanted me in the same. I was hard headed. But I’d see shock. Soon a lot of shock. A whole O line going he’s flying right past or thru us. Yep. Then I’d see anger & hear threats. Sometimes I’d just drive that guy right into the QB. I did learn you can’t pick them up & throw them into the QB. I started a lot of fights. Late in games I’d see fear. Exhaustion. On offense I was worse. Id knock my own linemen out of the way. Intentionally run right into defenders. I delivered the blow. You have them when they start running to get out of your way. I loved hearing why are you running away from him. Tackle him. I can’t. But if you tried to go for “my” knees, I took it personal. I’d find you on the field. I’d come drive right into your knees. That’s old school football. Like a war. Kids would try to punch me in the sack as I ran by. If I was on the ground they’d try to punch me. I saw stuff like that with my kids. In football I’d tackle you pick you up. Slam you back on your feet. They’d throw a flag. But don’t be impressed. Low level football. There’s like one of me. As you move up there’s more & more. By college everyone is good. A few are elite. In the pros it’s not just elite. It’s durability. Gotta hold up. Many of the best players ever ended in middle or high school. Quit. Got hurt. Those guys in the pros stuck with it & are durable. At best I was a college player maybe at a big school. But to motivate you they tell you your going any & every where. The big names. What annoyed me. They’d get glassy eyed & want me to keep playing that way & endlessly. No amount of points was enough. Now. You wanna see dirty. Watch for this. At a certain moment. Often early. A team will set up the O line. One will jump off sides. The O will stand up & relax. Offsides. But they will have one or two fast guys like me. They will fly to the QB & smash him. They created the penalty on purpose. Want to hurt the QB. May go after ankles. Knees. Hi lo. That’s where one guy goes for your knees from one side. Another from other side. Those knees have body going wrong ways. I hated the foot turners. Plays over. They grab your foot with both hands & try to rotate all the way around.
