My friend doesn’t exactly comfort me when I tell them about my sexuality. Through online research of the proper terminology I’m trying to pair down what I identify as. As of right now, Bi and Demisexual. I get really happy to tell someone when I think I’m just a little closer to finding the terminology that suits me best, so naturally I run to tell my best friend. But their responses are things like “I can see that” or “Whatever floats your boat.” I know she doesn’t mean harm but when I hear someone say “I can see that” it feels likes they are agreeing on a topic. My sexuality isn’t a topic of agreement. It’s not a side of a debate that you’re sympathizing with. When people say “Whatever floats your boat” it’s usually said when pertaining to an eccentric pizza topping, not my sexuality. Because I know she doesn’t mean harm it makes me feel bad that I take offense to what she says.
