Today I had a truly disturbing experience with people in my community and the police. I was at the local park just playing soccer when I decided to leave there was only one other car in the parking lot, and there was and older woman getting into it. I would like to point out that I did not even look directly at the car. I simply put my things in the bed of my truck and began to drive away. I was at the park exit and the car was right behind me I thought nothing of it however once I got on the highway I realized that the same car was right behind. As if they were following me for some reason. I had planned on hitting the gym afterwards anyways so I just kept driving I knew something was off when I was heading to the gym that is not relatively close to the park and the same car was still behind me. At this point I’m pretty nervous and I pull into the gym however the car is gone now so I begin to calm down. Just as I am calm there are two cops that pull in behind me. When the cops come up to my window and ask me to roll down the window and put my hands on the steering wheel I am terrified. They begin to tell me that a lady called the police saying that she saw a man come from out of the bushes and believed that he was taking pictures of her and acting strange. The part that took me from a state of shock to absolute anger was when they said that she was worried about her safety. They then proceeded to ask me more than enough questions about the incident, and treat me like a criminal. I felt like I should share this incident as I needed to get it off my chest. It has been bothering me since it happened. I can’t help but think that this has something to do with my race. It also has me questioning myself. Am I intimidating? Did I do something wrong? Is there something that I could have done to avoid this? The area it happened in was Myrtle Beach.
