La Peau de Chagrin from Honoré de Balzac was one of my favorite book when I was a big fan of old French literature. The story is about a man, that lost everything and goes into a random store before killing himself. For sell in that store there is old skin with a engraving on it: Take me and all your desire will come true, but for every desire I'll take a part of your life. The man took this skin, and everything he desire happen. From fortune to the love of his life, but more he was enjoying and loving life again. More the skin was getting smaller, showing how much he has to live. To a point where even wanting the salt or pepper on the table was showing the skin getting smaller. Where he was left with a life he love now dearly, but where he can't desire anything without losing his life.
