Hey (Uncle Si); I watch pro football every week. But I don’t have to. I love college football. In the pros they limit salary; roster size; practice. Pass rules. Allow free agency. All aimed at gambling. Keep every game close & undecided until the last moment. It makes things interesting. But I can’t be passionate about it. Everybody copies everybody. New England has been dominant for yrs. shouldn’t happen anymore. But their HC is the best I’ve seen. They had Brady the goat at QB for yrs. That’s like Jordan having Pippin & Rodman. Tom didn’t have an off-season with the Bucs; so may have missed one of last 2-3 shots at another title. If BB can win a Super with Cam just throw him a parade ever day for a yr. But in college there are so many layers of chaos. I love it. North Dakota state winning title after title. Yes Kansas could maybe beat them; but they dominate that level. In college we had powers in the past. Most are still relevant. Blue chips. Oklahoma; Texas; Notre Dame; Ohio State; Alabama. Some are currently cow chips: USC; Nebraska; Michigan. But they could all cycle back. There’s enough opponents for all to be good in the same season. There’s new powers like LSU; Oregon, & Georgia. There’s over 100 other stories. All with different uniforms; traditions; crazed fan bases. I love it. Teams are passionate about winning a wagon wheel or keg of nails. One team had no rival. So they tried to make up one. The other team won the game but left the trophy in the locker room. An HC who stops an interview to talk about UFOs. Fans burning couches. A team touching a rock before games that used to be a door stop. The turnover belts; shoulder pads; chains. I’m pretty sure there was a turnover trash can one year. You don’t get that passion & fanaticism in the pros. A rivalry where a governor refuses to use a letter of the alphabet. Mascots getting in fights. You k ow your fires up when the mascots fight. Giant marching bands. Cheerleaders. Fans showing up for games where a team plays itself. I’m not kidding. The teams have a game where the first team plays the second team. Just a scrimmage. Some games have more fans show up than show up for the super bowl. In fact; there are bigger college stations in tiny towns than all the pro stadiums in major cities. The ratings are not as high as the NFL. That’s because each teams (there are a lot) has its fans either at the game; watching it on TV, or listening in the radio. All of these fans still have a football high from Saturday when they set down to watch the NFL with pro fans on Sunday. I’ve set at pro games. I’ve set at big college games. The college environment gets insane. I’ve went to college games where I looked at the traffic & just went to eat & wonder around with my kids for hours. The traffic looked like an LA traffic jam. Only worse. I took my kids to various sporting events over the yrs. Like mini-vacations.
